The Flaws, The Brothers Movement and Myp ET Jeep

The Flaws, The Brothers Movement, Myp Et Jeep. Three up-and-coming bands play the Friday Club.Electric Avenue has put together a great 3 band line-up featuring some of Ireland’s finest alternative rock bands for the Imagine Festival on Friday 24th October. The Flaws headline with support from The Brothers Movement and Myp Et Jeep. 2007 was a great breakthrough year for The Flaws. They were nominated for the Choice Music Album of The Year award and also for 2 Meteor Awards. Their debut album “Achieving Greatness” was hailed by respected music critic John Meagher (Sunday Times) as the best Irish Album of 2007 and it also got a massive thumbs up from Hot Press Magazine. A fan-base, developed by constant gigging all over the country, made it one of the few Irish CDs to make the Top 10 last year. Three singles have been released from the album to date, the hugely popular hit 'Sixteen', fan favourite, '1981' and live favourite “Out Tonight”. The band also played a flawless set at the 2007 Electric Picnic festival which resulted in an invite to play at the event again for 2008. They also played at the legendary Glastonbury festival this summer, a rarity for an Irish indie-pop band. The Electric Ave gig is the final date of their extensive Irish Tour so expect the lads to be in fine form.. The Brothers Movement has risen from the ashes of legendary Dublin garage rockers Mainline. The lads were practically adopted by Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, who took them all over Europe as their favourite support band. Now they have a new beginning but with the same opus, to push themselves to the limit and be the best band they can be. They had a stellar start, being invited to support their heroes The Jesus & Mary Chain at The Roundhouse in London this year, and they also made a huge impression at this year’s Oxegen festival. Ladies and gentlemen you are all invited to join The Brothers Movement. Kilkenny band, Myp et Jeep have brought their distinctive rock sound the length and breadth of the country over the last 2 years with a string of performances supporting the likes of: Snow Patrol, Republic of Loose and Frank & Walters to name but a few. Winners of the Kilkenny battle of the bands in 2005, they were asked to play the Hard Working Class Heroes Festival, Ireland’s major music showcase, and featured on the festival's compilation cd, with 'Enough Is Enough' being one of the most downloaded tracks from the competition. The band have developed their sound further over the last year with U2 and Elvis Costello main man, Leo Pearson, manning the controls. Their debut single is due for release on Sept. 19th on Reekus Records and will be available from i-Tunes and selected stores, stay tuned for further details! Most of all "enjoy Myp et Jeep sensibly"

Leon Redbone
more info

Leon Redbone

Leon Redbone is a singer and guitarist specializing in interpretations of early 20th-century music, including jazz and blues standards and Tin Pan Alley classics. One of Leon Redbone classics ‘Shine on harvest Moon’ is a fine example of his talent. [click here to watch on youtube] Redbone's origins are shrouded in mystery. Redbone has cited his date of birth as October 29, 1929; the date was the day of the U.S. stock market crash that sparked the Great Depression. Redbone also claimed to have been born in Bombay during a monsoon to parents Niccolò Paganini (a composer and violinist who died in 1840) and Jenny Lind (a singer who died in 1887). [click here to watch on YouTube] Leon sings Diddy Wah Diddy He first appeared on stage in Canada in the early 1970s. Redbone so impressed musician Ramblin' Jack Elliot, that when he returned to New York he told everyone he knew about Redbone's musical breadth and mysterious eccentricities. Bob Dylan sought him out at the next Mariposa Folk Festival. In a Rolling Stone interview, Dylan said that if he were ever to start a label, Redbone would be the first artist he wanted to record. Leon sings Melancholy baby: [click here to watch on YouTube] He acted in the offbeat feature film "Candy Mountain," with Tom Waits. He provided television theme songs to "Mr. Belvedere" and "Harry and the Hendersons," and had a memorable guest role as the quixotic, guitar-wielding guardian to Corky on ABC's critically acclaimed "Life Goes On." He's even been the subject of Far Side cartoons. "I think of these things as obstacles rather than opportunities," Leon modestly confesses, "because if they were opportunities it means I actually took the business of doing them seriously. To take myself too seriously is the gentle kiss of death." New York choreographer Eliot Feld wrote Paper Tiger, a ballet woven around 11 of Redbone's signature songs. Apparently a conversation between Feld and Mikhail Baryshnikov included a mention of Redbone, and a phone call started the process. A few months later, a ballet was born. "Most things I get involved in usually work out that way," he explains. "Somebody makes a phone call. There's not very much in the way of initiating or soliciting from my end. It's not my forte." If there is one common element to Redbone's diverse music, it's his mastery of his constant companion: the acoustic guitar. It's easy to get lost in his stage exploits, which move between vaudeville and performance art, and overlook what an accomplished player he is. Fingerpicking is delivered with a ragtime bounce, mirroring the style of Blind Blake, and chords are leaped upon with the grace of a hurler. Describing his playing, Redbone says, "I am totally absorbed in the business of learning, but I don't want to be an apprentice to the business of learning. I simply want to absorb everything I can and not be compartmentalized in my approach...I only know what sounds good to me." He has so far released a total of eleven albums.

The happy Prince

THE HAPPY PRINCE by Oscar Wilde Performed by Michael James Ford; Directed by Bairbre Ni Chaoimh; Designed by Jack Kirwan Music by Trevor Knight This is storytelling at its best - the satrical nature of the two Wilde stories makes them highly appealing to an adult audience whilst children from eight years of age upwards are enthralled by the beautiful imagery and characterisation. This is great family entertainment. The Happy Prince is perhaps the best loved and most enduringly popular of all Oscar Wilde’s stories, It is the bittersweet tale of a gregarious swallow who befriends a melancholy statue while en route to Egypt. The bird helps the Prince to alleviate the suffering of his poor citizens and in doing so learns profound truths about the nature of love and suffering. …Michael James Ford has an enchanting style of storytelling that leaves the audience hanging on his every word. Sunday Tribune …a shimmering piece, bleak and heartbreaking as well as ultimately hopeful. Sunday Independent …Michael James Ford is mesmerising as he carries us through Wilde’s perfect mixture of magic, exoticism, mundane reality and insensitive, shortsighted pragmatism and vanity. The Remarkable Rocket

THE REMARKABLE ROCKET by Oscar Wilde Performed by Michael James Ford; Directed by Trevor Knight; Designed by Emilia Simcox; Music by Trevor Knight The Remarkable Rocket is an outrageously funny exploration of vanity and pomposity. Written in 1888, The Remarkable Rocket was inspired by the egocentric personality of Wilde’s former friend, the artist James Mc Neill Whistler, who used to refer to himself as " The Amazing One" and whose work Wilde once likened to " a rocket…bursting in a perfectly blank sky." The story tells of a boastful and self-deluded firework who lives in a fairytale world inhabited by a colourful array of characters, including a beautiful princess, a precocious page, a tone-deaf king, a phlegmatic frog and a broken-hearted Catherine wheel. The Remarkable Rocket is a cautionary tale for all ages and is perfect family entertainment. This highly theatrical production was specially commissioned by The Enniskillen Oscar Wilde Festival. It is directed by the composer Trevor Knight, who also provides the musical score and it features a stunning backdrop by Emelia Simcox. …this small but perfectly performed production…is a joy to watch and listen to. Irish Times …Ford never misses a beat as he tears through the characters in a demonstration of superb storytelling. Irish Independent …dazzles and delights…a sonorous and sparkling show. Daily Mail

Mephisto Theatre Co. present The World's Wife

Female figures from the worlds of myths, fairytales and history finally get a word in with The World’s Wife; a playful stage show based on the poetry collection of the same name from Carol Ann Duffy. "She (Duffy) reveals the foibles of the great, the ghastly and the ordinary bloke and the sufferings of those closest to them. The result is a melange of history lesson, fairy-tale and modern-day domestic tragedy, with the occasional joke thrown in for good measure...Duffy's poetics are flawless - she never misses a beat, her pace is exhilarating, and her language is original and exciting." - Scotsman Dragging overlooked characters from the past into modern contexts, World’s Wife is an accessible, fun-filled frolic through the dark world of the forgotten female. Featuring characters such as Mrs. Freud, Medusa, Queen Kong and the Pope Joan herself this hilarious show is surely not to be missed. Based in Galway Mephisto had in their first year produced 4 plays, were touring internationally and had achieved critical acclaim. Their second year has seen them surpass expectations with 5 new shows and an ever-expanding reputation. Refusing to stick with one particular tradition, the company produces work which is diverse and innovative in its form and presentation. About the author: Carol Ann Duffy (born December 23, 1955) is a British poet, playwright and freelance writer born in Glasgow, Scotland. She grew up in Staffordshire and graduated in philosophy from Liverpool University in 1977. Carol Ann Duffy was awarded an OBE in 1995, and a CBE in 2002. She has won many awards. Paris

With a brilliant French cast headed by Juliette Binoche and Romain Duris as siblings menaced by terminal illness, and the Parisian boulevards and backstreets looking glorious in widescreen, this expansive ensemble drama from Cédric Klapisch could hardly go wrong-and it doesn’t. Pierre (Duris) is an ex-dancer in need of a heart transplant, and when his sister Elise (Binoche) finds out, she drops everything and moves in to both take care of him and cheer him up. Over the following months, they cross paths with a variety of people: a market seller (Dupontel) who still has feelings for his ex-wife (Ferrier); a professor (Luchini) whose brother (Cluzet) doesn't get him and whose student (Laurent) is a bit frightened by him; and an obsessive, mildly racist baker (Viard) who reluctantly hires a North African assistant (Ouazani). With terrific poise and the crispest, cleanest cinematography imaginable, the 27-year-old French director Céline Sciamma has given us a very provocative and stylish drama set in the world of teenage girls' synchronised swimming. The setting is a suburb just north of Paris, and a provincial pool which is the arena for the local school's girls' synchro-swim team, whose undoubted star is glamorous Floriane, played by Adele Haenel. Sciamma exposes vulnerabilities and discloses the awful gulf between boy and girl, girl and girl, gay and straight, and most agonisingly of all between pretty and non-pretty.. Ron Sexsmith

Ron Sexsmith – Making a most welcome return to Waterford, Ron Sexsmith has built up a staunchly loyal following over the years. He has just released his ninth album, Exit Strategy of the Soul, the soul being exactly where Ron’s songs come from. He is a song writing master craftsman whose songs have been covered by artists such as Elvis Costello, Billy Bragg, Chris Martin, Rod Stewart, Feist and Steve Earle. He will perform with hi bass guitarist, [click here to watch on YouTube] Ron Sexsmith is a major contemporary writer/artist who has amassed a sizable and consistently enthralling body of work since making his major label debut in 1995 with his self-titled album on Interscope, followed by such eloquent musical gems as Other Songs (1997), Blue Boy (2001), Retriever (2004) and Time Being (2006). Each has its own particular character but is connected to the rest by the overarching intelligence, impeccable taste and understated emotionality of this single-minded voice in the pop-cultural wilderness. As one new fan put it in a comment on iTunes, Sexsmith's music "wins you over with a silk punch." Well put. [click here to watch on YouTube] On his ninth album, the cagily titled Exit Strategy of the Soul (with an emphasis on the last word of this provocative phrase), Sexsmith once again brings a provocative new wrinkle to his expansive aesthetic. Informed but not entrapped by soul and gospel music, ornamented by a Cuban horn section and his own gorgeously imperfect piano playing, the album achieves a sort of metaphysical dimension while maintaining breathtaking intimacy. Support on the night will come from local musician Shane Barry and The Distractions.

Phil Collins Jazz Trio

The Phill Collins Jazz Trio (Phill Collins, piano, Chris Mc Carthy, bass, Fionn O’Ceallachain, drums, with special guest Danny Pullman, saxophone) echoes the current directions being explored in jazz; fusing contemporary popular music grooves with through-composed structural arrangements. The original themes and compositions played by the trio move from mellow, meandering, Colemanesque melody lines to more hard-edged and driving, funky tones - the music from this trio is very much music from the twenty-first century, for the twenty-first century. Pianist Phill Collins is from Milford Haven in Wales and obtained his B.A. in Jazz Studies in 1999 at the Leeds College of Music, winning the ‘Friends Prize for Jazz and Popular Piano’. He currently lectures and teaches in the Waterford Institute of Technology.Much of his composing for the trio is inspired by the premise of his Composition Masters - to examine the interface between Classical music, and Jazz in formal composition.

Shane Barry and The Distractions

Extra treat for local music fans - supporting on Sexsmith will be Shane barry and the Distractions - The bands original 4 piece line-up of Shane Barry on guitar and vocals, John Daly on Drums, Nathan Power on bass and Jamie Barden on keys are now joined by the talents of Sean Kennedy and Hugh Beglin on trumpets and Mickey Rowe on various saxaphones. The band have put in 2 great performances over Spraoi and are due to embark on a national tour in November starting with a support slot for Ron Sexsmith. Review of their new album: Shane Barry & The Distractions have raised the barrier for all Waterford bands with the release of their astonishing debut CD, “Radio Friction”, this month. The quality of Shane’s songs and production were only hinted at previously, but aided by a fantastic brass section and other local guest musicians, the confidence and pure talent of The Distractions shines through, and this really is as good as any CD released by an Irish band in 2008. From fantastic opener “Let It Be Known”, through killer tracks like “The World Won’t Stop” and “Kites”, and ending with the sublime 6 minute track “The Finest Line”, which is as good an album closer as “Champagne Supernova” by Oasis or “Looking Glass” by The Las, this music deserves your attention. Since they began, Shane Barry and the Distractions have been ignoring the disco beat, the 1,2,3,4’s and spiked guitars of modern music’s biggest culprits. Instead, they have fashioned their sounds from the golden glare of 1970’s fm radio. The original line-up of 4 has expanded to include a brass section with all the moves of the Stax and Motown back catalogue! Radio Friction, their debut album, with its chocolate-rich production, has taken a year and a half to record. With it’s surf keyboards and synths, flowing string sections, acapella breaks and brass attacks, it is the glorious sound of a band tuned into a broken radio dial.
